Retaining Walls In Melbourne

At New Era Landscapes, we build retaining walls across Melbourne's south east. Concrete sleeper, rock, block and rendered, drained properly behind, and finished into the yard either side of them.

New Era Landscapes builds retaining walls in Melbourne, from a single garden terrace to a full run down the side of a sloping block. We do the excavation, the footing, the drainage and the wall itself. Quotes are free and measured on site.

A retaining wall is holding back soil, and soil gets heavy once it's wet. The part you can't see, the footing under the wall and the drain behind it, is what decides how long the part you can see stays straight.

We're retaining wall builders in Melbourne who do the landscaping around the wall as well. A wall doesn't stop mid-air, so the levels, the paving and the garden beds either side are part of the same job and the same quote.

What a wall is for

What Does a Retaining Wall Actually Do?

It holds a change in ground level, so a slope becomes flat ground you can use. That's the whole job. Every other decision you make about a wall is about how it does that and what it looks like doing it.

A sloping backyard isn't unusable. It's just unusable for the things you want a backyard for. A trampoline, a table and chairs, a lawn the kids can play on, a shed: they all need level ground, and a wall is how you buy it without carting half the block away.

The second job is stopping the slope moving. Melbourne's clay swells through a wet winter and shrinks back over summer, and ground on a slope creeps downhill while that happens. A wall with a drain behind it takes that pressure. A wall without one collects it until something gives.

The work

Retaining Wall Types We Build In Melbourne

Four materials cover almost every job we quote, and you don't need to arrive knowing which one you want. Tell us what the slope's doing and how you want to use the ground either side, and we'll tell you what suits.

Concrete retaining walls in Melbourne are what we build most, and there's a good reason for it. Galvanised steel posts go into concrete footings and the sleepers drop in between, so we can build to an engineer's drawing and get it signed off without argument. It's the type most often approved on a boundary, and if you're picturing a grey car park wall, the moulded finishes have moved on a long way.

Rock retaining walls in Melbourne suit the opposite situation. Where a sleeper wall draws a hard line, rock reads as landscape, and it handles a long, shallow bank better than anything else because we can follow a curve with no straight runs at all. It needs more room front to back, so pick it where you have space rather than a tight side boundary.

Block and rendered walls are the same wall at two stages. The block does the structural work, the render's the finish, and that's the one you want when the wall's in view of the house.

What each wall type is generally chosen for.

Why walls fail

Why Does Drainage Decide How Long a Wall Lasts?

Because water that can't get out from behind a wall pushes on it, and it never stops pushing. Nearly every leaning wall you drive past is a drainage failure rather than a strength failure. The wall was strong enough for soil, and then got asked to hold soil plus water.

So we build the back of the wall as carefully as the front. We run an agricultural drain along the base and out to a legal discharge point, stack drainage aggregate over it, and wrap geotextile fabric around the lot so soil can't wash into the stone and silt it up. A blocked drain is the same as no drain, just slower to show.

Then we put the backfill in in layers and compact it each time. Tipped in one go it looks finished and settles months later, which is why you can get a perfect wall and still end up with a trench along the back of it.

The process

Our Retaining Wall Process

Every wall starts with the ground and where the water goes. From there it runs in three stages.

  1. Consultation and site assessment. We measure the fall, check the soil coming out of the ground, and see how a machine gets in. Access moves the price more than you would expect.
  2. An itemised quote. The footing, the drainage, the wall and the finishing either side are priced separately, so you can see what each costs and stage the job if that suits you.
  3. Build and finish. Our own crew digs it, builds it, drains it and backfills it in layers, then finishes the ground either side.

Why New Era

Choosing New Era Landscapes for Your Retaining Wall

We bring over 10 years of experience in landscaping and turf work across Melbourne, and retaining walls run through most of it. A wall's rarely the only thing happening in a yard you're redoing.

That's the practical difference between us and most retaining wall contractors in Melbourne. Excavation, concreting, paving, block work and planting are all done by our own crew, so the ground above and below the wall is finished by the same people who built it. Nobody hands you back a wall sitting in a trench.

We build to the drawings where a job is engineered, and we tell you up front which parts need a permit, including when the answer adds weeks to the job.

Quotes are free, measured on site and itemised, with no obligation. You can see the work on Instagram, where we post jobs as they finish.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Melbourne?

Generally yes once it reaches a metre. Schedule 3 of Victoria's Building Regulations 2018 exempts a wall under a metre only when it stands alone, isn't part of other building work, and isn't protecting adjoining property. A wall on a boundary needs one whatever its height. We tell you which parts of your job need a permit before you commit.

How much does a retaining wall cost in Melbourne?

Height and length matter less than three other things: the material, whether it needs engineering, and how easily a machine can reach it. A wall a bobcat can drive to costs differently to the same wall barrowed down a side path. Quotes are free, measured on site and itemised, so you can see what the footing, the drainage and the wall each cost.

What is the best material for a retaining wall?

For most Melbourne backyards it's concrete sleeper for structural runs and boundaries, rock where you want the wall to read as garden, and block where it needs a rendered face. Height decides more than taste does, because past a metre the wall is engineered and the material has to suit the design.

How long does a retaining wall take to build?

A short garden terrace is usually a few days. A long run on a sloping block, or anything needing a permit and engineered drawings, is measured in weeks, and most of that is paperwork rather than building.

Can you build a retaining wall on the boundary?

Yes, and it's one of the most common walls we quote. It needs a building permit regardless of height, and no part of it can cross the title boundary, including the footing and the excavation it sits in. That catches people out, because the footing is wider than the wall.
